Professor Edgar Pieterse is the Director of the African Centre for Cities; a newly formed inter-disciplinary research centre on urban development at the University of Cape Town. He is the holder of the NRF South African Research Chair in Urban Policy. Recent publications include: Voices of the Transition: The Politics, Poetics and Practices of Development in South Africa (2004), Consolidating Developmental Local Government (2008), and City Futures: Confronting the Crisis of Urban Development (Zed Books, 2008). Edgar holds a PhD in Urban Studies from London School of Economics and an MA in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies (The Hague).
