Sunil Abraham
Sunil Abraham founded Mahiti in 1998. Mahiti [www.mahiti.org] aims to reduce the cost and complexity of information and communication technology for the Voluntary Sector by using free software. Sunil was elected an Ashoka.org fellow in 1999 and a Sarai.net fellow in 2003. Sunil is also a sub-board member of the Open Society Institute’s Information Programme. Between June 2004 and June 2007, Sunil managed the International Open Source Network. Currently he is working for ENRAP.ORG, an electronic network of the International Fund for Agricultural Development projects in the Asia-Pacific facilitated and co-funded by International Development Research Centre.
Gustavo Ambrosini
(1965), graduated with a degree and doctrate in research from the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic of Torino, where his is a University Reasearcher and professor
of Architectural design. He has also held lectures at ETSAB of Barcelona, Graduat Superior en Paisatgisme. He published Strade e Paesaggi (2002) and curated with
others Paesaggi a Molte Velocità. (2004), Disegnare Paesaggi Costruiti (2003), Progetti integrati per la riqualificazione urbana (1999), In Piemonte (1999), Paesaggio e progetto urbano (1998). Free-lance architect, he is co-owner with C.Catino, C. Grometto and M. Penna of the studio Negozio Blu Architects and Associates.
Shumon Basar
Shumon Basar is a London based writer, curator and editor of two recent books Cities from Zero (AA Publications) and With/Without: Spatial Practices, Products and Politics in the Middle East (Moutamarat/Bidoun). He also directs cultural Projects at the Architectural Association, and is a doctoral candidate at Goldsmiths College, London.
Michael Batty
Dr. Michael Batty is Bartlett Professor of Planning at University College London where he directs the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA). From 1990 to 1995, he was Director of the NSF Natio National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) in the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research work involves the development of computer models of cities and regions, and he has published many books and articles in this area, the most recent being Cities and Complexity (MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2005) and an edited volume GIS, Spatial Analysis and Modeling (ESRI Press, Redlands, CA, 2005). Riccardo Bedrone
President of the XXIII UIA World Congress of Architecture and of the Committee of the Order of P.P.C Architects Torino. He is a associate professor and teaches Technique
and urban planning at the II Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico of Torino. He deals with urban planning on large scale and with methods of inclusive interventions on landscapes within the European Community. Michele Bonino
Michele Bonino (1974) is a professor of Architecture design at the Polytechnic of Torino and holds a ph.D in research in the history of architecture and urban planning.

Aldo Bonomi
Aldo Bonomi founded and directs the research institute AAster that develops its work projects through local development processes, the mutation of the social composition and jobs, and its inclusion/exclusion concepts. He is director of the magazine Comunitas and curates the column Microcosmi on il sole 24 ore. Sociologist by formation he has gathered significant research material during his professional years, and continues with his work on finding a moment of equilibrium between theoretical synthesis and active research. His most recent publication was Milano ai tempi delle moltitudini, Bruno Mondadori, 2008.
Virginio Briatore
Virginio Briatore, 1955, Piedmont, is a contemporary languages scholar and his professional focus is on lifedesign. On these themes he published 400 articles, 10 books,
and he held seminars and workshops in three continents. He is a contributing editor to Interni, D. La Repubblica delle Donne, DAMn° (Brussels), Surface (New York), Florense (Sau Paulo). He is Design Director at DMC VillaTosca, the European Design Management Centre founded by Matsushita Group, for which is now editor of the creativity portal aedo-to.com.
Greg Clark
Greg Clark is a city and regional development advisor, speaker, and facilitator, with 20 years experience, principally in leadership roles in city agencies in London, UK, and advisory roles with many cities/regions, Governmental and inter-Governmental organisations, internationally. He is currently Senior Fellow, ULI EMIA, Lead Advisor on City and Regional Development at the Department for Communities and Local Government, UK, Chairman of the OECD LEED Forum of Development Agencies and Investment Strategies, and advisor to the OECD and British Council on City and Regional Development.
Pierre-Alain Croset
(1957, Ginevra) graduated in architecture from the Polytechnic of Losanna in 1982. From 1982 to 1996 he was director’s assistant for “Casabella”. He has published numerous articles on modern and contemporary architecture. From 1985 to 1993 he collaborated with Luigi Snozzi, first as an assisstant at the Polytechnic of Losanna, then as an architect in the studio of Locarno. From 1995 he practices architecture in Brescia. After being invited to the Columbia University (New York) in 1994, he was nominated professor of architecture at the Technische Universitat of Graz, where he was head of the Faculty of Architecture from 2001 to 2002. In 2002 he became professor of architectural design at the faculty of architecture, Polytechnic of Torino.
Claudia Cassatella
Claudia Cassatella, architect and Landscape designer doctoral candidate, is an urban planning researcher at the Dipartimento Interateneo Territorio of the Polytechnic and University of Turin. She is mainly involved in landscape design and planning. She has been the curator of the three past editions of the international review Creare Paesaggi, teorie e progetti in Europa. Among her publications: Paesaggi indecisi /Undefined landscapes (with F. Bagliani, 2007), Il territorio, conoscenza e rappresentazione (with R. Gambino, 2005), and Iperpaesaggi (2001).
Francesca De Filippi
Francesca De Filippi, architect, graduated from the Politecnico of Torino where she accomplished a Ph.D and a postgraduate specialization in Architecture and city technologies for urban areas in developing countries. Currently, she is the director of the research and documentation center for architecture, city and technology for developing
countries in the Casa-città department. She is the manager of the Development Cooperation of the International Projects Units of the Department of International
Affairs of the Polytechnic University of Torino.
Frederico Duarte
After having studied communication design in Lisbon, and having worked as a designer in Kuala Lumpur and Treviso, Frederico (Lisbon, 1979) joined Experimenta from 2003 to 2006. He gained experience working as a curator, programmer and communicator for ExperimentaDesign – Biennial of Lisbon and other projects, he was also assistant curator of product design for the [P] – Design de Portugal exhibition, with shows in Milan and
Lisbon. He is currently working as a freelance designer, curator and writer in various projects and publications, and will be one of the first 12 students of the Design Criticism

Nathan Edelson
Nathan Edelson is a senior partner in 42nd Street Consulting and an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Regional and Community Planning. His work focuses on building inclusive communities that celebrate social and cultural diversity. He has been part of planning initiatives in Brasil, South Africa, and the USA as well as Canada. For 24 years he led many City of Vancouver Planning Department land use and social policy initiatives in a variety of neighbourhoods, including the Downtown Eastside.

Guta Moura Guedes
Co-founder of the association “Experimenta – Associação para a Promoção do Design e Cultura de Projecto”, created in Lisbon in 1998, of which is Chair since 2000.
Since 1999 she directs and programms ExperimentaDesign – Biennial of Lisbon, as co-author and Director. She is member of the International Advisory Committee

Arif Hasan
Mr. Arif Hasan, a Pakistani architect and planner, teacher, social researcher, and writer, studied architecture at the Oxford Polytechnic, England. Mr. Hasan is renowned
for his involvement with low-income settlement programmes, and is the architect of a large number of important residential, commercial, and educational facilities in Pakistan. The Orangi Pilot Project to which he is consultant has attracted international attention and, in 1990, the Japanese government presented Mr. Hasan with its International Year for the Shelterless Memorial Award. Mr. Hasan served as a member of the 1992 and 1995 Award Steering Committees, and as a member of the 1989 Award Technical Review.
Andreas Kipar
Architect and landscaper lives and works in Milan and in the Ruhr basin. He was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, 1960. He graduated from the University of Essen with a specialization in Landscape Architecture. He also graduated from the University of Milan with a specialization in Architecture. He teaches Landscape Architecture at the University of Genoa. He works in Italy and Germany with his professional firm KLA – kiparlandschaftsarchitekten Milano-Duisburg. In 1990, with Dott. Giovanni Sala, he founded the design firm Land – Landscape Architecture Nature Development, based in Milan.
Erminia Maricato
Deputy Minister for the Cities of Brazil, affirmed her Government’s commitment to fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals, especially with regard to improving living
conditions in human settlements. With 84% of Brazil’s population living in cities, she said her government had devoted special attention to urban housing conditions. She adopted housing policies to expand access to housing for low-income and middle-income families. This lead to constructed and upgraded housing units for 800,000 families. Housing programmes aimed at rural and indigenous populations were also being developed, with priority given to women as property owners.
Neville Mars – Dynamic City Foundation

Luca Molinari
Luca Molinari was born in 1966 and graduated in architecture from the University of Milan. A professor at the Department of Architecture in Ascoli for Theory of architectural composition and Contemporary History at the Second Department of Architecture in Naples. He is adjunct professor at the Department of Architecture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Guang-Zhou, (China). He created and curated the first edition of the Italian Gold medal for Architecture awards. He is architecture and design editor for the Skira publishing house. He writes and collaborates with Italian and foreign periodicals, among which Abitare, Domus, Lotus, Il progetto, Area, Archis, L’architecture d’aujourd’hui and Vanity Fair (Italia). In 2006 he received the Ernesto Nathan Rogers Prize for architectural criticism and communication at the Venice Biennale.

Samuel Muhunyu
Aged 52 he trained in agricuture engineering. He served in community development (since 1980) in several parts of Kenya including the arid north and currently in high agricultural potential areas as civil servant and in NGO since 1992. He is currently the country coordinator for Necofa, leader of SF Central Rift convivium and also member of international council for SF representing Africa.
Loretta Napoleoni
Born in Rome, in the mid 1970s Loretta Napoleoni was a fulbright scholar at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and a Rotary
Scholar at the London School of Economics. In the early 1980s she worked at the National Bank of Hungary on the convertibility of the florin. Loretta Napoleoni is the best selling author of Terror Incorporated and Insurgent Iraq. She is senior partner of G Risk, a London based risk agency. As Chairman of the countering terrorism financing
group for the Club de Madrid, Napoleoni brought heads of state from around the world together to create a new strategy for combating the financing of terror networks.
Marcos Novak
Marcos Novak is a global nomad, and an artist, theorist, and transarchitect. His projects, theoretical essays, and interviews have been translated into over twenty languages
and have appeared in over 70 countries, and he lectures, teaches, and exhibits worldwide. Drawing upon architecture, music, and computation, and introducing numerous additional influences from art, science, and technology, his work intentionally defies categorization. He is universally recognized as the pioneer of architecture in cyberspace, of the critical consideration of virtual space as architectural and urban place, and of the use of generative computational composition in architecture and design.
Guy Perry
Is a French American architect and urban planner with development and design experience on five continents. Prior to founding INVI, Guy was Senior Vice President with TrizecHahn overseeing the design and development of projects throughout Europe.Over the past few years Guy has led research efforts for design and development strategies at MIT, Harvard University and the University of Toronto. He has presented at United Nations in New York and Geneva, as well as, MIPIM, Barcelona Meeting Point, Cityscape and ULI conferences worldwide regarding strategies for sustainable urban development.
Edgar Pieterse
Professor Edgar Pieterse is the Director of the African Centre for Cities, a newly formed inter-disciplinary research centre on urban development at the University of Cape Town. He is the holder of the NRF South African Research Chair in Urban Policy. Recent publications include: Voices of the Transition: The Politics, Poetics and Practices of Development in South Africa (2004), Consolidating Developmental Local Government (2008), and City Futures: Confronting the Crisis of Urban Development (Zed Books, 2008). Edgar holds a PhD in Urban Studies from London School of Economics and an MA in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies (The Hague).

Joseph Rykwert
Joseph Rykwert is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the history of art and architecture. A naturalized British citizen, he was born in Warsaw in 1926. He is professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania and also Paul Philippe Cret Professor of Architecture. He has spoken at conferences and seminars in most of the world’s
leading universities and has been awarded honorary degrees in architecture from several renowned institutes of higher learning. His most celebrated books are: The Golden

John Thackara
John Thackara is director of Doors of Perception (Doors). This celebrated conference, which takes place every two years in India, brings together paradigm-changing designers,
technology developers, and grassroots innovators. A former London bus driver and later a book and magazine editor, John is now a producer of projects and festivals. In 2007, John was programme director of Designs of the time (Dott 07) a new biennial in North East England; in 2008 he is commissioner of City Eco Lab at St Cite du Design in St Etienne, the main French design biennial. His most recent books are In the bubble: designing

Pier Giorgio Turi
Architect and planner. Advisor for the City of Torino, he runs the Substainable City Workshop. Since 2000 he has cooperated with the Ordine degli Architetti di Torino on
issues such as urban substainability and since 2006 he has organized the OAT committee Substainable architectures and cities. For the XXIII UIA – World Congress of Architecture – he is a lecturer for the topic Transmitting the sustainable city and he coordinates the main sessions Sustainable Cities and To Educate and to Understand.
