Cities and Complexity
Contemporary art is increasingly being inspired by science. The field of complexity is one that has ventured from its academic confines into the world of art. Complexity reveals emerging patterns created from the apparently random interactions of multiple agents. Art doesn’t attempt to illustrate complexity in its scientific sense but recognizes it as an instrument of creation and of strong imagery; a guiding post. Cities are a fine example of millions of patterns constantly re-structuring themselves, through change and people, as the urban writer Jane Jacobs states, “Cities are a complex order”. Mateo Willis offers us, through photography and film, his interpretation of cities and complexity.
