The eight winning solutions of the Living Labs Global Award 2011 were announced yesterday in Stockholm. The competition called for technological solutions that would address the local societal problems pinpointed by eight global cities in search of the latest service innovations to make their cities smarter, greener and more inclusive. The participant cities were: Barcelona, Taipei, Sant Cugat, Lagos, San Francisco, Eindhoven, Stockholm, & Cape Town.

Technologies such as mobile broadband, smart hand devices, cloud computing and open-source public databases are becoming central to envisioning favorable future scenarios of cities. Living Labs Global, a non-profit association based in Copenhagen (Denmark) joined forces with the partnered cities with the aim of bringing companies and decision-makers from all corners of the globe together to promote innovation in services and mobility in cities, and to better capacitate the potential of new technologies to change our day-to-day lives for the better.

Proposals tackled issues of transportation, mobility, healthcare, safety, energy consumption, waste, food, piracy and entrepreneurship. The competition drew submissions from hundreds of countries, which were narrowed down to forty shortlisted finalists. Yesterday the eight winning entries were announced in Stockholm at the Stockholm Summit of Service innovation for cities, and the winners are:

Stockholm: in response to the cities call for ‘Intelligent Transport Solutions’ the winning solution was submitted by SpotScoutSpotScout, Inc.. SpotScout is a real-time parking spot exchange marketplace and community for short term (daily or hourly) parking.

Barcelona: ‘Citysolver’, by the spanish service firm Bitcarrier, wins in response to Barcelona’s call for ‘Automation Services for Cities’. Cape Town: the winner is ‘Venture Capital Cultivator Fund’, a hybrid VC Funding model designed by PoweredbyVC, a venture capital fund management and strategic consulting business, to establish a Venture Capital Fund geared towards emerging African entrepreneurs.

Eindhoven: the city of Eindhoven launched a call for Intelligent Urban Lighting Solutions the winner is ‘Integral Solution for Urban Infrastructures (SIIUR)’, an innovative and pioneering urban living lab integrating the concept of Intelligent Urban Lighting and Smartcities designed by Barcelona Digital Technology Centre.

San Francisco: ‘Open Data as a Platform for Citizen Service Delivery’, designed by Seattle’s Socrata Inc wins in response to San Francisco’s call to create the next generation of government. ‘Open Data as a Platform for Citizen Service Delivery’ is a cloud-based information delivery platform that can optimize the dissemination of timely and relevant answers to citizen questions through a self-service mode across multiple channels.

Sant Cugat: Worldsensing’s ‘Fastpark’ solution uses innovative sensor and radio technologies to detect the presence of vacant parking places, both indoors or outdoors in response to the city’s call for Smart Urban Services Based on Sensor Networks.

Behind each Category lies the commitment of a city to pilot the winning showcase, with full institutional support to evaluate the impact the solution can have on reaching the community’s objectives.
