Human Cities Festival 2010: Celebrating Public Space

The premier edition of the Human Cities Festival will take place in Brussels from May 6 – 16 2010. The main theme of the 10 day festival in Brussels, Bozar and around will be public space specifically celebrating public space as a common good. The content of the festival will explore socio-cultural dynamics of sustainable design for urban spaces and the potential of the emerging move towards urban co-creation of the public and common space for an adequate quality of life in 21st century cities. The interdisciplinary festival will bring international experts, professionals and students to Brussels for a content-rich program of exhibitions, conferences, discussion panels, films and workshops. As part of the festival’s mission to raise awareness of public space in Brussels events and activities organized for families and children will also be an integral part of the program transforming Brussels into a ‘design city lab’.

‘Human Cities’ is an existent project and network, supported by the ‘Culture 2007 – 2013’ program of the European Commission and originally conceived in 2006 by Pro Materia in occasion of the international symposium Human Cities: sustainable urban design, that is dedicated to improving the user friendliness and practices of urban design and management through increased inter-change between all parties involved in the city making profession and citizen empowerment.
