The full content of the fifth issue of Cluster – City – is now available online in English and Italian, all articles are also downloadable in pdf.
‘City’ was published in 2005, and marked a turning point for Cluster as thereafter ‘City’ – its functions, specializations, and in general its territorial organization – became the focal point of the editorial project.
Four years down the line the content of City still provides valuable references and insight into topical issues related to, and affecting, the contemporary city such as social innovation in bottom up practices, digital and interactive urban planning, de-industrialization, migration, sustainability and globalization.
Re-reading the articles also reveals how in a relatively short space of time new technologies have permeated the fabric of the built environment especially in terms of empirical, communication and service centered developments, while it also seems fair to observe that government and forms of governance have changed less.
Cities still face persisting social and economic challenges but the hardest nut to crack remains environmental. The urgent need to find effective solutions for cities to fight climate change indicate that we are still in an experimental phase as natural systems and urban systems, although in many ways akin, continue to clash.
